The use of Lilial in hair products

Het gebruik van Lilial in haarproducten - KOOS • alles voor de kapper

Olaplex, a product that everyone has heard of by now. Olaplex is mainly known for its effects, which work wonders for your hair. Now it appears that one of the ingredients (Lilial) can be harmful to your health in large quantities. And this does not only apply to Olaplex products. We looked into it for you.

What did Olaplex use Lilial for?

At Olaplex, it is not a matter of ‘or’, but ‘and’. This means that this miracle product not only repairs, but also protects, gives the hair shine and ensures vibrant colour.

Many hairdressers already use Olaplex in their treatments, but recently the brand has been in the news due to the use of a certain ingredient: Lilial (the chemical name: butylphenyl methylpropional).

Lilial is an ingredient that Olaplex uses for fragrance. Lilial is therefore a fragrance in Olaplex, which provides the pleasant floral scent, also known as the lily of the valley aroma. Not only Olaplex used this fragrance, it is a common ingredient in various personal care products.

Which other products?

Besides Olaplex, there are a few other products that used Lilial. For example, Kremlon Ice Water. Because no replacement is available yet, we have chosen to remove this product from our range. Of course, we hope to be able to offer a replacement again when this is safe.

What has changed?

On January 28, 2019, the Risk Assessment Committee of the European Chemicals Agency published a study stating that Lilial is reprotoxic. This means that Lilial can be harmful to health in large quantities, particularly to the fertility of the user and potentially to an unborn child. Therefore, Lilial has been classified as a category 1b reprotoxic substance since August 11, 2020. Since March 1, 2022, Lilial has been banned in products. For Olaplex, there was more than enough reason not to use the substance anymore, and therefore they stopped using Lilial in January 2022.

Because despite Olaplex using the substance for the fragrance experience, it was never harmful. Lilial is usually used in small quantities, often a concentration of maximum 0.1%. For Olaplex, the concentration was only 0.0119%. And because the substance was only used for fragrance, the effectiveness of Olaplex is not diminished by omitting this substance.

Olaplex in the future

Olaplex understood that there were a lot of questions about Lilial. Watch the statement from Olaplex in the video on their Instagram account. Lilial was only in Olaplex No. 2 and Olaplex No. 3.

Do you want to know if your product still contains Lilial? Then check if you see ‘butylphenyl methylpropional’ in the ingredients. If this is no longer listed, then you already have the latest version at home. If you do still come across it (and you are a customer of Koos van der Beek), please contact us to discuss the options. We are happy to help!
